Student Goverment Association meets (November 2019)

Kourtney E. Douglas, Content Strategist

Let’s face it: the college experience cannot fully be replaced virtually. Around this time, Howard Community College is usually abuzz with student programs and the irresistible air of potential. Even though student life may not be the same until next fall, HCC’s students have shown initiative and innovation in continuing to center the accomplishments, education and interests of the student body. One way you can get involved in student life this fall is by joining a club! Though the time to create your own club has passed, there are several diverse clubs to choose from at HCC.

Society of Women Engineers – Karina Soto Perez
Goal: The goal of the Society of Women Engineers is to offer a space for women and aspiring engineers to explore different fields and network with students who have similar career goals. The club is open to anyone interested in engineering who support diversity in the field. The SWE is working on establishing an affiliation with local women’s professional groups as well as the national Society of Women Engineers.

Meetings: Every Thursday at 4:00PM via Zoom

Cru – Abigail Tack
Goals:  The goal of CRU exploring and growing one’s Christian faith in the HCC community. Please contact Naomi at [email protected] for details or more information. You can also view C.R.U.’s connect card for more info.

Meetings: Every Wednesday at 8:00PM via Zoom.

Hispanic Student Union-  Josselyn Martinez ([email protected])
Goals: To provide a safe space where everyone comes together to support one another and support the Latinx community. The plan this semester is to gain more information on immigration issues and adapting during the COVID-19 pandemic, which more adversely affects Latinx communities than the general population of the US.

Meetings:  Every Wednesday at 5:30 via Zoom

Mixed Martial Arts Club – Andrew Moultrie ([email protected])

Goals: The goal of the MMA Club is to learn about different fighting styles and learning to apply principles in those fighting styles to their everyday lives.

Meetings: Every Sunday from 5:30P -7:30PM via Zoom

Caribbean Student Association (CSA) – Arriana Carrington
([email protected])

Goals: The CSA’s mission is to teach, learn, and share more about Caribbean culture. At their weekly meetings, they have discussions on current events and occasional events such as cooking classes.

Meetings: Every Thursday at 4:00PM – 5:00PM via Zoom

Progressive Politics Clubs – Noah Hannsen
Interested students can sign up to receive more information here.

Goals: This is the PPC’s first year as a club at HCC. They are a group of liberal, left-wing minded students. Their goals are to works with local progressive campaigns, talk about current political events, and do volunteer work in the community.

Meetings: Every Friday from 3:00PM – 4:00PM via Zoom

The Society of Physics Students – Zainah Wadi ([email protected])

Meetings: Every Friday from 12:00PM – 1:00PM via Zoom.

Don’t see anything that interests you and your friends? There are other ways to get virtually involved on campus!

SGA still needs student senators!

The student senate represents the student body and individual committees within the student executive board. Students must be enrolled in at least 6 credits, and maintain a 2.5 GPA. Freshmen at HCC are welcome to become student senators, but they are required to maintain a 2.5 after their first semester. Please e-mail [email protected] for more information on becoming a student senator.

Student Government Association Meetings

These are held two Fridays each month from 12:00 PM-1:00 PM via Zoom.  These are wonderful opportunities to get to know your Student Government executive board and student senators, as well as participate in fun icebreakers, hear guest speakers, and participate in an open forum to discuss your opinions about HCC and other campus business. Representatives from each official club will also be there. This gives students a chance to learn about new clubs forming on campus. The next dates for these meetings are as follows:

October 23rd

November 6th and 20th

The final meeting of the fall semester will be held on December 4th.

Student Programming Board (SPB)

Remember those awesome resource fairs and really cool events that happen on campus, free of charge to students? The Student Programming Board is the student body that plans and executes those events for the student body. SPB is made up of a student leadership staff and volunteers who help plan and staff events. Even though there are no in-person events for the 2020-2021 school year, SPB has been busy planning virtual events for the Fall semester. Consider volunteering with SPB — Volunteers accrue hours that can earn them certificates and Amazon Gift Cards! All information about joining SPB as a volunteer can be found on their Canvas page.

Right now, the Student Programming Board is hosting a Scary Story Contest! Entries are due by October 23rd, and the top story will be published here in The HCC Times! The winner will be paid $25.00 for their selected entry. Enter here now!
