On Feb. 27, also known as Pokémon Day, The Pokémon Company announced a DLC for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, the latest games, during a Pokémon Presents.

The DLC, named “The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero,” is split into two expansion passes, with Part 1 being called “The Teal Mask” and Part 2 being called “The Indigo Disk.”

The Teal Mask is slated for release in Fall 2023 and will take the player outside of the Paldea region to the land of Kitakami on a field trip. There, the player will be able to meet new people and Pokémon while unraveling the mysteries behind the area’s folk tales.

The Teal Mask will also introduce new Pokémon in Okidogi, Munkidori and Fezandipiti—three heroic Pokémon that protected Kitakami in the past. It is believed the three Pokémon are based on the story of Momotarō who was accompanied by a dog, monkey and pheasant in his journey to defeat the ogres. Part 1 of the expansion pass will also introduce a new Pokémon in Ogerpon, which is believed to be a legendary Pokémon.

The Indigo Disk is expected to release in Winter 2023 and continues the story where the player becomes an exchange student at Blueberry Academy.

Most of the unusual academy is located under the ocean, and its curriculum prioritizes Pokémon battling.

Part 2 of the expansion pass will also introduce a new legendary Pokémon in Terapagos. Terapagos is presumed to be the unnamed Pokémon depicted and teased in a notebook in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. Similar to Ogerpon, Terapagos seems to be based on a story as well.

The story Terapagos is loosely based on that of Urashima Tarō, a fisherman, who enjoys daydreaming. In the story, Urashima saves a turtle and as a reward for saving him, the turtle takes him to the sea palace which is just like Urashima dreamt it to be. After becoming homesick, Urashima wishes to return home and receives a box he is told not to open. Upon returning home, Urashima finds out decades have passed and opens the box to find out what happened out of panic. However, the box instead turns him into a 100-year-old man and Urashima is left to ponder whether or not he actually went to the sea palace or dreamt the entire thing.

The two upcoming expansion passes will feature over 230 returning Pokémon that had not appeared in Pokémon Scarlet or Violet. The returning Pokémon will include Shiftry, Milotic, Yanma, Zebstrika, Metagross and Dewgong.

It will be interesting to see how these two expansion passes will continue the story of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet while addressing the numerous questions left unanswered in the game’s original story.
