The HCC Times is student-led and our office is located on campus in the Office of Student Life. Many of our positions are student leadership roles and provide an opportunity for personal, academic, and career growth. Students interested in communications, journalism, academia, and writing are encouraged to apply. Check out our available roles below.

Writers

The HCC Times is now hiring writers for the Fall 2023 semester!

If you are driven, team-oriented and passionate about writing or journalism, please fill out an application to join The HCC Times team of staff writers.

The student writer position is remotely-based, with only one on-campus meeting required each month.

Writers must be students at Howard Community College, but are not required to have a writing or journalism background, nor are they required to be English majors. A passion for writing and for their article topics is expected. Writers are expected to hone their craft, receive constructive feedback, and work directly with the faculty adviser, content strategist and copy editor to publish quality pieces for The HCC Times.

Articles are published with a weekly or bi-weekly turnaround. Staff writers are paid $25.00 per article published, with the ability to publish up to four articles each month. Regular contributing staff writers are expected to publish at least two articles monthly. The staff writer position is an excellent opportunity to build a diverse and interesting portfolio, grow with a team and develop new skills. Staff writers will attend monthly meetings where they can brainstorm article ideas and in engage in activities that are centered on gaining writing skills.

Content Strategist

The Content Strategist leads The HCC Times staff in organizing and assigning articles on The HCC Times website. The Content Strategist is also responsible for the recruitment of writers and photographers. They lead the design and functionality of the website, as well as the planning and execution of all newspaper events, team meetings, and workshops. This position works directly with students to brainstorm and approve article topics.

The HCC Times Content Strategist is a part-time student leadership position. The Content Strategist must work between 10 and 15 hours each week in the Office of Student Life from The HCC Times office.

Aside from working for The HCC Times, the Content Strategist is a leader in the Student Life Department. The Content Strategist and Editor are expected to work in tandem with other student leadership organizations including the Student Programming Board and Student Government Association on events hosted by the Office of Student Life.

In addition to assisting with staffing for Welcome Week (Fall and Spring), student leaders must additionally take part in semester retreats (Fall and Spring) that center on leadership skills and personal/professional growth.

Editor

The Editor primarily edits articles for grammar, structure and style formatting. They are expected to meet with or otherwise contact student journalists on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to review changes made and address their growth as writers. The Editor is responsible for the timely publication of articles according to the given publication schedule. The Editor will primarily use WordPress to complete these duties.

The Editor also assists the Content Strategist in creating workshops for student journalists and creating outreach events for The HCC Times.

Photographers

If you are driven, team-oriented and passionate about photography, please fill out an application to join The HCC Times team of student photographers.

Photographers must be students at Howard Community College, but are not required to have a photography background, nor are they required to be majoring in a related field. Photographers are expected to hone their craft, receive constructive feedback, and work directly with the faculty adviser and student leaders of The HCC Times to publish quality photographs. Photographers will be assigned a pending article for which they must produce a photograph that accurately reflects the article’s contents. They may choose to photograph important individuals in the community, occurrences at campus-wide events, still-life, or other subjects.

Student photographers will submit a cluster of five images to be considered for publication, receiving five dollars for each photo ($25.00 total). The article’s writer will work with the photographer to select the image the writer prefers. The image chosen by the writer will be evaluated by the editor-in-chief and content strategist before being approved.

Photographers can take photos for two to five articles each month, thus they may receive up to $100 per month for their work.

This position is an excellent opportunity to build a diverse and interesting portfolio, grow with a team and develop new skills.
