The HCC Times is student-led and our office is located on campus in the Office of Student Life. Many of our positions are student leadership roles and provide an opportunity for personal, academic, and career growth. Students interested in communications, journalism, academia, and writing are encourages to apply. Check out our available roles below.

Editor-in-Chief

The HCC Times editor-in-chief is a part-time student leadership position. The editor-in-chief works approximately 10 hours per week in the Office of Student Life. Currently, this position is fully remote. 
The editor-in-chief works directly with the content strategist by editing articles for grammar, structure and style formatting. They are expected to meet with or otherwise contact student journalists on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to review changes made and address their growth as writers. The editor-in-chief also is responsible for the timely publication of articles according to the given publication schedule. They will primarily use WordPress to complete these duties. The editor-in-chief is paid $12.75/hour.

This position will be opening after the Spring 2021 semster.

Requirements:
– Must be a student at Howard Community College
– Must maintain at least a 2.5 GPA or higher cumulative and noncumulative
– Must be able to work 10 hours each week in the Office of Student Life
– Must have a passion for and understanding of reading, writing, and editing
– Must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours

Preferred:
– Experience using the following: WordPress, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, and Google Drive

Stand out Qualities:
– Working knowledge of HTML and web design or a willingness to learn these skills

Student Leadership
As a student leader, the editor-in-chief is expected to work in tandem with other student leadership organizations, including the Student Programming Board and Student Government Association on dual programming and events hosted by the Office of Student Life. In addition to assisting in the planning and organization of spring and fall semesters of New Student Orientation (NSO), student leaders must take part in semester retreats that center on leadership skills and personal/professional growth. Student leaders are expected to demonstrate professional conduct when representing their organization and Howard Community College at events on and off-campus.

Writers, Reporters and Student Journalists

The student journalist position is fully remote at this time. All applicants must be at least part-time students at Howard Community College. Articles are published on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with a weekly or bi-weekly turnaround. Student journalists are paid $25.00 per article published, with the ability to publish up to four articles each month. Regular contributing journalists are assigned beats (specific categories in which writers are expected to stay up-to-date), are expected to publish at least two articles monthly and work directly with the editor-in-chief in revising their articles. Journalists will attend monthly meetings where work-in-progress can receive constructive feedback and where they can participate in skill-building activities that are centered on writing skills. Due to the closure of the HCC campus during the COVID-19 pandemic, these meetings are scheduled to take place in a virtual setting.

The student journalist position is an excellent opportunity to build a diverse and interesting portfolio, grow with a team and develop new skills.

Local News
National News
Technology
Health and Wellness
Music

Requirements:
– Interested in writing, journalism or communications
– Be open to constructive criticism about your written work
– Willing to dedicate time to revising your work and correcting errors
– Ability to adhere to deadlines and commit to 2-5 articles and one meeting each month (virtual or in-person)

Standout Qualities:
– Previously published or a passion for writing!
– Familiar with WordPress and AP Style Guide
