The HCC Times is student-led and our office is located on campus in the Office of Student Life. Many of our positions are student leadership roles and provide an opportunity for personal, academic, and career growth. Students interested in communications, journalism, academia, and writing are encouraged to apply. Check out our available roles below.

Student Journalists

All applicants for the Student Journalist position must be at least part-time students at Howard Community College. Articles are published on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, with a weekly or bi-weekly turnaround. Student journalists are paid $25.00 per article published, with the ability to publish up to five articles each month. Regular contributing journalists are assigned beats (specific categories in which writers are expected to stay up-to-date), are expected to publish at least two articles monthly, and work directly with the editor in revising their articles. Journalists will attend periodic meetings to develop their writing skills, discuss plans for the newspaper, and strengthen their relationship with other members of The HCC Times. 

The student journalist position is an excellent opportunity to build a diverse and interesting portfolio, grow with a team and develop new skills. 

We are currently seeking writers and reporters interested in the following topics:

Sports
Local News
National News
Technology
Health and Wellness
Music

Requirements:
– Interested in writing, journalism or communications
– Be open to constructive criticism about your written work
– Willing to dedicate time to revising your work and correcting errors
– Ability to adhere to deadlines and commit to 2-5 articles and one meeting each month (virtual or in-person)

Standout Qualities:
– Previously published or a passion for writing!
– Familiar with WordPress and AP Style Guide

Photojournalists

Photo-journalists must be students at Howard Community College, but are not required to have a photography background, nor are they required to be majoring in a related field. Photo-journalists are expected to hone their craft, receive constructive feedback, and work directly with the faculty adviser and student leaders of The HCC Times to publish quality photographs.

Student photo-journalists will submit a cluster of five images for publication, receiving five dollars for each photo ($25.00 total). The article’s writer will work with the photo-journalist to select the image the writer prefers. The image chosen by the writer will be evaluated by the editor-in-chief and content strategist before being approved. 

Photo-journalists can take photographs for four articles each month, thus they may receive up to $100 per month for their work. 

This position is an excellent opportunity to build a diverse and interesting portfolio, grow with a team and develop new skills.
