The HCC Times is student-led and our office is located on campus in the Office of Student Life. Many of our positions are student leadership roles and provide an opportunity for personal, academic, and career growth. Students interested in communications, journalism, academia, and writing are encouraged to apply. Check out our available roles below.

Writers

The HCC Times is now hiring writers for the Fall 2024-25 semester!

 

If you are driven, team-oriented and passionate about writing or journalism, please fill out an application to join The HCC Times team of staff writers.

 

Writers must be students at Howard Community College, but are not required to have a writing or journalism background, nor are they required to be English majors. A passion for writing and for their article topics is expected. Writers are expected to hone their craft, receive constructive feedback, and work directly with the faculty adviser, content strategist and copy editor to publish quality pieces for The HCC Times.

 

  • The student writer position is a remote role, requiring only one on-campus meeting per month. Articles are published on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.
  • Staff writers receive $25.00 per published article and have the opportunity to submit up to four articles each month. Regular contributors are expected to publish a minimum of two articles per month.
  • In addition to their writing responsibilities, staff writers are required to attend monthly meetings. These meetings provide an opportunity to brainstorm article ideas and participate in activities designed to enhance writing skills.
  • Staff writers are expected to maintain regular communication with the Content Strategist and Editor regarding the progress and status of their articles.

 

The staff writer position is an excellent opportunity to build a diverse and interesting portfolio, grow with a team and develop new skills.

Photographers

If you are motivated, collaborative, and passionate about photography, we encourage you to apply to join The HCC Times team of student photographers.

 

Photographers must be students at Howard Community College, but are not required to have a photography background, nor are they required to be majoring in a related field. Photographers are expected to hone their craft, receive constructive feedback, and work directly with the faculty adviser and student leaders of The HCC Times to publish quality photographs. Photographers will be assigned a pending article for which they must produce a photograph that accurately reflects the article’s contents. They may choose to photograph important individuals in the community, occurrences at campus-wide events, still-life, or other subjects.

 

  • Applicants will be required to submit a portfolio of five images for consideration, with each accepted photo earning $5.00, totaling $25.00.
  • The writer of the associated article will select their preferred image, which will then be reviewed by the Editor-in-Chief and Content Strategist for final approval.
  • Photographers must be flexible to attend various events as requested.
  • Photographers have the opportunity to contribute to two to five articles per month, potentially earning up to $100 per month based on their submissions.

 

This position is an excellent opportunity to build a diverse and interesting portfolio, grow with a team and develop new skills.

Content Strategist

The Content Strategist leads The HCC Times staff in organizing and assigning articles on The HCC Times website. The Content Strategist is also responsible for the recruitment of writers and photographers. They lead the design and functionality of the website, as well as the planning and execution of all newspaper events, team meetings, and workshops. This position works directly with students to brainstorm and approve article topics.

 

  • The Content Strategist position at The HCC Times is a part-time student leadership role. The Content Strategist is required to work between 10 and 15 hours per week in the Office of Student Life, based in The HCC Times office.
  • In addition to their responsibilities with The HCC Times, the Content Strategist serves as a leader within the Student Life Department. The role involves collaboration with other student leadership organizations, including the Student Programming Board and Student Government Association, to support events hosted by the Office of Student Life.
  • The Content Strategist is also expected to assist with staffing for Welcome Week in both the Fall and Spring semesters and participate in semester retreats focused on leadership development and personal/professional growth.

Editor

The Editor primarily edits articles for grammar, structure and style formatting. They are expected to meet with or otherwise contact student journalists on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to review changes made and address their growth as writers. The Editor is responsible for the timely publication of articles according to the given publication schedule. The Editor will primarily use WordPress to complete these duties. The HCC Times Editor is a part-time student leadership position. The Editor must work between 10 and 15 hours each week in the Office of Student Life from The HCC Times office. 

 

  • The Editor supports the Content Strategist in developing workshops for student journalists and organizing outreach events for The HCC Times.
  • In addition to their role with The HCC Times, the Editor is a leader within the Student Life Department. The Editor, alongside the Content Strategist, is expected to collaborate with other student leadership organizations, including the Student Programming Board and Student Government Association, to facilitate events hosted by the Office of Student Life.
  • The Editor is also responsible for assisting with staffing during Welcome Week in both the Fall and Spring semesters. Furthermore, student leaders are required to participate in semester retreats focused on leadership development and personal and professional growth.
