The HCC Times is student-led and our office is located on campus in the Office of Student Life. Many of our positions are student leadership roles and provide an opportunity for personal, academic, and career growth. Students interested in communications, journalism, academia, and writing are encourages to apply. Check out our available roles below.

Content Strategist

The HCC Times Content Strategist is a part-time student leadership position. The content strategist must work a minimum of 15 hours and a maximum of 20 hours each week in the Office of Student Life from The HCC Times office. Due to the current pandemic, all work will be remote. Fall 2020 will be a training semester — the training Content Strategist will work between 5 – 10 hours alongside the current Content Strategisit until Spring 2021 semester. 

The content strategist leads The HCC Times staff in organizing, assigning, editing, and publishing articles on The HCC Times website. The content strategist is also responsible for recruiting journalists and staff. They lead the design and functionality of the website, as well as the planning and execution of all newspaper events, team meetings, and workshops. This position works directly with all students and faculty involved in the publication of The HCC Times. During training, the newly hired content strategist will work directly with the current content strategist for the Fall 2020 semester to ensure a smooth transition into the role. 

The content strategist will work directly with the following personnel:

  • Student Life Associates who manage the administrative needs of The HCC Times 
  • HCC Times Faculty Advisor, who works directly with the staff to develop best journalism practices
  • The Director and Associate Director of Student Life to plan events and recruit student journalists and newspaper staff
  • The HCC Times copy editor and student journalists to decide on article topics, review drafts and cultivate each journalist’s growth as a writer
  • The HCC Times administrative assistant to file work orders, AV requests and create meeting documents, contact newspaper leads and vendors for events, sell advertising space and oversee the maintenance of all representations of The HCC Times on campus (i.e. bulletin boards, advertisements, and flyers)
  • Student Government and Student Program Board leadership to plan cooperative events, such as New Student Orientation

– Must be a student at Howard Community College taking at least 6 credit hours
– Must maintain at least a 2.5 GPA or higher (cumulative and overall)
– Must be able to work at least 15 hours each week in the Office of Student Life
– Must have a passion for reading, writing, and editing
– Must be willing to work on both small and large teams
– Must be able to tactfully deliver direct constructive criticism to emerging and experienced writers alike
– Must be able to professionally represent The HCC Times and Howard Community College at all times

– Experience using the following: WordPress, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office Suite and Google Drive
– Experience in a leadership role, such as student government, team captains, supervisor roles or club leader 

Stand out Qualities:
– Working knowledge of HTML and web design or a willingness to learn these skills!
– Experience working with student-led newspaper, blogging or freelance journalism

Student Leadership
As a student leader, the content strategist and copy editor are expected to work in tandem with other student leadership organizations including the Student Programming Board and Student Government Association on events hosted by the Office of Student Life. In addition to assisting with the planning and organization of New Student Orientation (NSO), student leaders must additionally take part in semester retreats that center on leadership skills and personal/professional growth. Student leaders are expected to demonstrate professional conduct when representing their organization and Howard Community College at events on and off-campus.

Writers, Reporters and Student Journalists

The student journalist position is fully remote at this time. All applicants must be at least part-time students at Howard Community College. Articles are published on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with a weekly or bi-weekly turnaround. Student journalists are paid $25.00 per article published, with the ability to publish up to five articles each month. Regular contributing journalists are assigned beats (specific categories in which writers are expected to stay up-to-date), are expected to publish at least two articles monthly and work directly with the managing editor in revising their articles. Journalists will attend monthly meetings where work-in-progress can receive constructive feedback and where they can participate in skill-building activities that are centered on writing skills. Due to the closure of the HCC campus during the COVID-19 pandemic, these meetings are scheduled to take place in a virtual setting.

The student journalist position is an excellent opportunity to build a diverse and interesting portfolio, grow with a team and develop new skills. 

We are currently seeking writers and reporters interested in the following topics:

Local News
National News
Health and Wellness

– Interested in writing, journalism or communications
– Be open to constructive criticism about your written work
– Willing to dedicate time to revising your work and correcting errors
– Ability to adhere to deadlines and commit to 2-5 articles and one meeting each month (virtual or in-person)

Standout Qualities:
– Previously published or a passion for writing!
– Familiar with WordPress and AP Style Guide
