Howard Community College’s men’s cross-country team, varsity men’s basketball team, women’s basketball team, and the newly formed JV men’s basketball team were all in action, here’s how they all did:
NJCAA Division II Cross-Country National Championship
The HCC men’s cross-country team claimed their first Region 20 Division II championship since 2019 at Hagerstown Community College on October 26. However, their season wasn’t quite done as HCC sent two runners to the national championship at Pole Green Park in Richmond, VA on November 9. Sophomore Brandon McMillen ran the second best 8 kilometer time of his collegiate career, finishing with a time of 29:42.9 per TFFRS. Sophomore Ryan Thibadeau also ran the second best time of his collegiate career, coming in just behind McMillen with a time of 29:47.4 per TFFRS.
Men’s Basketball
HCC’s men’s basketball team made history on November 1, when they won their first ever game in the Kahlert Foundation Complex. Since then, the Dragons have played 4 games, only dropping one game as they added three to the win column.
November 9 – Vs. Essex County College (NJ), 47-71 Win
The men’s basketball team would win their second home game at the Kahlert Foundation Complex against Essex County College (NJ) in commanding fashion, at one point leading by 26 points in the second half. The Dragons scored 42 points off the bench, while out rebounding Essex 59 to 24. Sophomore Emanuel Henriques led the team in scoring with 12 points. Arthur Roaché and Savion Gowder each had 13 rebounds.
November 12 – Vs. Harcum College (PA), 66-63 Loss
The men’s basketball team failed to keep their winning streak at the Kahlert Foundation Complex against Harcum College (PA). Despite leading by 17 points just over a minute into the second half, Harcum College would mount an immense comeback tying the game with 4:20 left and taking the lead with just over 1:30 remaining in the game. Sophomore Emanuel Henriques lead both teams in scoring with 16 points despite the loss.
Cecil Mixer
Cecil Mixer Game #1: November 16 – Vs. Raritan Valley Community College (NJ), 80-63 Win
The Dragons would win their first game of the Cecil Mixer in North East, MD against Raritan Valley Community College (NJ), led by a double-double game by Sophomore Anthony Djami who recorded shot 7 for 11 from field, 4 for 5 from the free, en route to 18 points and 10 rebounds. The Dragons dominated defensively as a team, forcing 21 turnovers.
Cecil Mixer Game #2: November 17 – Vs. #21 County College of Morris (NJ), 57-41 Win
The Dragons recorded their first win against a ranked opponent of the season in their second game of the Cecil Mixer against the 21st ranked team in Division II defeating the County College of Morris 57-41. Sophomore Emanuel Henriques lead both teams in points scoring 16 and Sophomore Anthony Djami recorded another double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. The Dragons outrebounded the Titans 41 to 26. This win avenged the Dragons 89-77 loss to Morris in the NJCAA Division II tournament in March.
The men’s basketball team’s next game will be against Harrisburg Area Community College on November 21, at home in the Kahlert Foundation Complex.
Women’s Basketball
November 9 – Vs. Essex County College (NJ), 55-44 Loss
The women’s basketball team fell to Essex County College on November 9. The Dragons were down by 9 early in the third quarter, but 6 points by Nicole Forbes would help the Dragons take the lead with 2:25 remaining in the third. The Dragons would not keep the lead however, as Essex would take a lead they would not relinquish just under 3 minutes into the final frame. Nicole Forbes led the Dragons in scoring with 15 points.
The women’s basketball team’s next game will be against Christendom College on November 23 in Front Royal, VA.
JV Men’s Basketball
The JV men’s basketball team, led by coach Will Thomas, played their first ever game on November 14 against NCAA Division III’s Misericordia University’s JV squad in Dallas, PA. They would play their second ever game on November 15 against NCAA Division III Drew University in Madison, NJ. Despite losing both games, the JV team will continue to provide additional opportunities to those that want to play basketball at the intercollegiate level.
The JV basketball team is back in action on November 22 against West Nottingham Academy in Colora, MD.
