Men’s Basketball
The men’s basketball team went 1-1 this past week while hosting an Interfaith Night against Allegany College of Maryland on December 4, and then participating in the Hoop Here Get There Classic against the 22nd ranked team in Division 1 on December 7.
December 4 Vs. Allegany College of Maryland, 71-55 Win
Columbia, MD – The Dragons never trailed against the Trojans and lead by as much as 10 in the first half, but the Trojans managed to keep the game close until the final five minutes of the game when the Dragons went on a 13-point run to take a 14-point lead with just under three minutes remaining. HCC led by as much as 10 points in the first half, but the Trojans refused to let the game get out of hand, putting the game within two points with just over three and a half minutes remaining in the first frame, however the Dragons would extend the lead to seven points just before halftime.
The Trojans tied the game at 37 less than two minutes into the second frame and again at 39 twenty seconds later. However, the Dragons would begin putting the Trojans away a few minutes later, holding the Trojans at 43 points for nearly five minutes, while scoring 8 straight points. Anthony Djami scored 6 of those points while recording 3 rebounds and a steal in that time frame. The Trojans would take the Dragon lead to one point with 7:40 remaining in the game, before the Dragons scored 13 straight points, holding the Trojans scoreless until the final two minutes. The final score would finish at 71-55 with Sophomore Anthony Djami recording a double-double with a team leading and career high 19 points and 20 rebounds.
Hoop Here Get There Classic – December 7 Vs. #22 (DI) Monroe University, 55-80 Loss
Columbia, MD – The men’s basketball team played their second ranked opponent of the season, and first opponent ranked at the Division I NJCAA level. The Dragons found themselves at an early 12-6 deficit against Monroe University before they equalized at 12 just over 6 minutes into the game. The teams would trade points for the next 10 minutes before Monroe began to pull away. Monroe would take a 15 point lead with just over a minute lead which HCC would reduce to 12 with 8 seconds left in the half. However, the Dragons would not pull the game within single-digits for the remainder of the game, eventually losing 55-80. Sophomore Arthur Roaché recorded a double-double, leading the team in both rebounds and points with 11 and 13 respectively.
The men’s basketball team is back in action December 14 at #21 Montgomery College in the men’s edition of the HoCo-MoCo rivalry.
Women’s Basketball
Hoop Here Get There Classic – December 8 Vs. #3 CCBC Essex, 56-99 Loss
Columbia, MD – The women’s basketball team was only in action once this week after their game against Allegany College of Maryland, originally set for December 4, was postponed to January 26. The Dragons took on #3 in Division II CCBC Essex for their game in the Hoop Here Get There Classic on December 8. The Dragons never had the lead and fell to a 13 to 33 deficit by the end of the first quarter that they would not recover from. Sophomore shooting guard Jaylah Putman lead HCC in scoring with 24 points, as well as leading the team in rebounds with 6.
The women’s basketball team plays their next game on December 14 at Montgomery College in the women’s edition of the HoCo-MoCo rivalry.
JV Basketball
The JV men’s basketball team played two games this week, the first against Harcum College JV on December 3, and the second against Virginia Union University JV on December 8. In each game they came closer to winning than any game they had played before. In their game against Harcum College JV Freshman guard Jasper Hanna recorded a triple-double with 13 points, 10 assists, and 11 rebounds, but the Dragons would still fall 86 to 92. In their game against Virginia Union University JV Freshman guard Kanye McMahon lead the team with 17 points, and guard Jasper Hanna would record a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Virginia Union won the game in the final 30 seconds, scoring a jumper to put them up by 1 with 22 seconds left, and a free throw with 8 seconds left would extend the lead to 2. The Dragons were unable to score as time expired.
The JV Basketball team plays their next game at home on January 8 against McDaniel College JV.
