Melody vs. Mayhem: A Little Fight Music
November 20th 2025 was the opening night for the play: “A Little Fight Music,” which was the 20th anniversary for stage combat here at Howard Community College. I got to witness majestic numbers on set being played out.
For the first number there were actors and actresses alike running amongst themselves to gather the attention of the audience. By preparing for the fight scenes and sharing the beauty of theater, I believe this play brought the audience to be in awe.
I thought that this first number “All that Jazz” was quite entertaining. “All that Jazz” is actually a song from the musical “Chicago.” While there was sword fighting there was also beautiful music. This made all the better for their performance because of the pronounced singers.
The second number, “Sound Effects” and “Don Juan’s Wantons” were trying to teach the audience of how they were going to set the stage for their upcoming numbers. With the sound effects for punching, the occasional tumble weed, the audience was truly captivated by the creativeness of the team.
I think my utmost privilege was being able to see the “Disney Tango” number. This number put on quite a show. It shared the stories of villains like Cruella De Ville and Hades. It showed them putting a face to their name and fighting to show out.
This tango was one of my favorites because I thought that the play itself characterized a very playful yet aggressive piece. While being able to showcase the lovely dancing and singing, it also worked hard in sharing its fighting scenes.
For the last couple of numbers there were videos being played of stage combat, entangled love, and more importantly the last dance they did was to the tune of “We Are All in This Together” from “High School Musical,” but was called instead, “It’s a Knife Fight, Everybody.” I think this dance number really showed us the actors and actresses’ strengths which showed how powerful stage combat can be.
I think the laughter, the joy, the applauding of this show was very rewarding to those on stage. I think it is very important to those who put in the effort, the time, and strength to practice these fighting scenes.
While being able to practice these numbers is giving hard dedication it is also giving love. The love these performers had for theater was absolutely amazing. I saw it on every one of their faces, they loved to perform.
I would also like to point out and give credit to Jenny Male for directing and choreographing these scenes. I have never been to a play at HCC but now, I feel I must. This show made me understand the world of art and theater much more and enjoy it all the same.
This play was definitely something fun to see and watch. Congratulations to the students who brought this entertaining play to life.
